Job Description:

Practik is hiring four full-time, experienced metal fabricators to break ground on the fabrication of multiple large-scale artworks. These positions include, but are not limited to creating permanent public sculpture for multiple Sound Transit’s FWLE Light Rail Stations. Ideal applicants will take interest in both art production and specialized metal fabrication to be qualified for this work. Professional metal fabrication experience is required (3 years) and in addition, and professional artwork fabrication experience is encouraged.

Required skills for qualified applicants:

  • TIG and MIG welding proficiency (3+ years professional experience) - mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, bronze

  • WABO certifications in GTAW and GMAW

  • Professional metal fabrication experience in the architectural or artwork production fields

  • Efficient and accurate layout, fitting and measuring skills

  • Excellent grinder control and finishing skills (filing, blending and sanding a variety of metal alloys)

  • Experience in fundamental fabrication techniques (drilling, shearing, cutting, prepping joinery, forming, straightening, shaping, sheet metal forming etc.)

  • Ability in build to close tolerances and prepare metal for a variety of finishes, including patina, paint and powder coating

  • Mechanical competency of complex assemblies

  • Basic machining skills (manual milling and lathing)

  • Attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively as a team

  • Comfortable reading and building from shop drawings

  • Punctual and able to commute to in-shop and on-site shifts

  • Experience safely rigging heavy machinery and materials

  • Proper handling of finished materials

  • Able to lift 75 lbs.

  • Proper use of PPE (provided)

  • Strong communication skills and ability to treat co-workers, clients, neighbors, vendors and colleagues respectfully in accordance with Practik’s anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies

  • Ability to reliably commute or planning to relocate before starting work

Encouraged, but not required:

  • Certifications in Warehouse Forklift, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, Class 7 Telehandler Forklifts

  • Installation/construction experience

  • Understanding of routine equipment maintenance

  • Experience with metal finishing and patina work
